You’re all probably thinking, back to school already?! Surprisingly it is coming up quick on us and has already got me thinking of ways I can improve lunches again this school year for my Wee People. This week, WeeMan started a little extra schooling participating in a Summer Numeracy Learning Program Camp which was offered by our local school board. This of course got me thinking about back to school and how little time I truly have.
Since we are back into back to school mode I thought I’d share some ways I manage my mornings and keep my kids eating healthy!
Back to School Lunches Made Simple
Alright, let’s face it. Back to school sucks. Sure it is great having a few hours of quiet with the kids gone everyday; but I am back to running around each and every morning attempting to get everyone out the door before 8:30am. I do not look forward to this.
Lunches seem to be the most tedious part of my mornings. WeeMan likes certain things and BabyGirl likes the complete opposite. This means, I am making two menus every morning; and fingers crossed I don’t mix them up.
Every Sunday, I prep. By prep I mean I am setting everything out on the counters & organizing them. This includes cutting vegetables that will get put into lunches, probably not ate but I at least look like I care about what they eat, than I find all the things I know they’ll eat, count them out for the week & put them into my lunch drawer. Yes, lunch drawer. I have a rubbermaid tote in a drawer that is for nothing but lunch stuff. Nothing else.
Our lunches generally consist of the following:
- Strawberries & grapes
- Cucumber & carrots
- Crackers (no cheese)
- Fruit snacks
- Granola bar
Okay, yes a little much. Half the things only get partially ate but I’d rather excessive amounts than not enough.
The Holy Grail of Fruit Snacks
When it comes to fruit snacks I am a bit particular with these. I do not like my kids having excessive amounts of pointless sugars so I pay a few extra pennies every week to get the good kind. Recently, Mott’s Fruitsations has released a new fruit snack product line that has me feeling much better about what I put in my kids lunches.
The Motts Fruitsations + Veggie fruit snacks are what I like to call the holy grail of lunch snacks. They are only 80 calories per 22g pack, gluten free, naturally flavoured (which is a must have around here) and multiple yummy flavours in each back. This new fruit snack comes in both berry flavours and assorted fruit flavours.
Best part of these new fruit snacks, each box has 10 pouches! Yes, this is a big deal. Most fruit snacks come in 8 pack or 6 pack boxes. When you have 2 kids you want 10 pack boxes so you only have to buy one box a week.
Hiding the Veggies Gets Easy
I technically don’t hide vegetables anymore in my children’s diets. They eat them whether they like them or not. I am not a parent that caters much to their diets. I cook it, you eat it. This has benefited me over the years of many dietary ups and downs. My kids are only allowed one food choice that they truly never want to eat, but neither have found that food choice quite yet so I keep on cooking.
I know many parents who hide veggies in their kids diets. It is much easier than it used to be especially with the many companies doing it for us before we even get it home. Motts Fruitsations has done it for us now too with their new line of fruit snacks. Each pouch has a little extra veggie in it so your kids can get that disgusting vegetable they hate without them even knowing it. Best part, even the box design has the veggies hidden in the background so unless your child is very observant they won’t ever know!
