Who makes your morning coffee? Do you? Does your spouse make it for you in bed? How about your children? Well depending on their ages.

In my house it is every man for himself. Now during the week, the hubby is long gone before I even open my eyes. But on the weekends we usually rise pretty close to the same time and it always seems that it is up to me to make the morning coffee. Does it sound like I am being to hard on the hubby lately? Last week I am ranting about garbage and this week it is about coffee. Okay yes I am. I talk to other wives and their husbands do so much around the house and I feel like I have let my husband away with way too much and it is now biting me in the you know what.

No he isn’t lazy! When it comes to his garage he is out there in a flash to move or clean or design. Inside, not so much. I don’t even have trim throughout the whole house, says he is saving it for when he retires so he will have something to do. This has been going on for well over 16 years, since we remodeled our house. This weekend he has been working on new shelving units in his garage – needs to make room for that damn motor cycle! I did get a closet out of it though. We don’t have a closet on the main floor of the house and have been hanging our coats in the garage on a rope stretched across one wall. Okay maybe I am being a bit hard! We have a lovely home, that he has done the bulk of the work on, but nothing ever seems to get finished, close but never completely done.

We remodeled our kitchen I think two years ago, nope not done, no trim and dishwasher isn’t finished being installed.

Our dining room is done, well it could use a fresh coat of paint. Oh our front entrance actually is done – nope trim isn’t painted.

Now you are probably saying to yourselves, why don’t I do some of these things? Well I am not very handy. I have a tendency to make more work out of the simplest tasks. But I also keep the house clean, cook the meals, cut the grass, shovel the driveway and take the garbage out. And I am sorry but I think renovations are men’s work, I am not a big women’s libber and have never burnt my bra and sure not going to start now (I need that support).

Okay back to my morning coffee now that I have gotten that off my chest. During our holidays, I was usually first one up, some mornings my brother-in-law would beat me and guess what he would do. Yep he would make the morning coffee. Now during those five weeks of holidays, not once did my husband even get out of bed before me, his excuse, he is on holidays. Hello, thought I was too! So no coffee was made by my husband, and why was no coffee made by my husband? Because you were already up, says my husband. haha He kills me! Back home, coffee anyone, sure, well make it yourself.

I think I am just maybe having some sun withdrawals and picking on my poor husband – who really is a great guy – spoilt husband – but he is awesome really. He plays hockey two times a week, goes to the gym three times a week, watches hockey whenever it is on, golfs all summer and now has his new Harley to look forward to this summer. MMMMM something is wrong here! I really don’t go out much, I do laundry every day, do all the shopping, cooking and cleaning, and my only real hobby is reading (have the library to prove that) and work from home. Yep something is definitely wrong! During the summer I keep the grass cut, the pool and hot tub clean, do the barbecuing and entertaining, I even do the beer runs. This weekend my hubby actually brought me home two bottles of wine, was shocked when I asked if he would and he didn’t even hesitate, and I again can count on one hand how many times he has done that for me.

Alright I am done picking on him! All I am really saying or asking is can you just once in awhile maybe make me a cup of coffee in the morning without having to ask for it. Oh and without asking how I take it, does that change that often, don’t think so, pretty sure I have been drinking my coffee the same way for a whole lot of years.

Oh and baby, when you have gotten to this part, if you read down this far or have you already given up. I LOVE YOU!

This is not what I promised, I will get back to our vacation next week, just wanted to share a conversation from yesterday.

So who takes out the garbage in your house? And I don’t just mean the daily task of emptying the kitchen or bathroom garbage – trust me that bugs me too. No I am wondering about the once a week out to the road for garbage pick-up? In my house I could count on one hand – that is four fingers and a thumb – how many times in 20 years my husband has taken the garbage to the curb. Why? Why is this just another chore that has fallen upon me to take care of. And if I don’t put it out to the curb it waits for the following Thursday and costs me a garbage tag.

During our dinner last night garbage was our conversation. Me asking why he can’t take it to the curb for me – which is silly because he doesn’t even take it to the can from the kitchen why would I think he would take it to the curb. And you won’t believe his response. His response was “well I don’t want you to be bored during the day”. WHAT! Now my daughter was present for the end of this conversation and she almost fell off her chair laughing at his response. Also proceeded to tell him that I spend the better part of each and every morning cleaning, putting away and picking up after him. Don’t get me wrong, he isn’t a slob – he is messy. Every morning I put away his breakfast fixings, his dishes to the dishwasher, towels usually in the bathroom, and various clothes around the house. Does your husband hang his hoodies around the house?

Back to the garbage debate. Who should put out the garbage to the curb? Now I am not trying to make this a sexist thing that only men should be responsible for the garbage, but heck why not?

Garbage is heavy – men have muscle.

He is up way before me, and going that way, drop the garbage to the curb. I can even leave garbage in the garage right in his path, and it will still be there when I go to let the dog out. Recycle, who am I kidding, that so isn’t going to happen either. Actually, half the time I can’t even get him to put the recycle in the bin, he throws it in the garbage. Pet peeve as well.

But I guess because I work from home the household has fallen into my lap to take care of. Now please re-read that sentence. I do work from home and I do make money. Doesn’t that mean I have a job? Well even when I worked outside of the home I still took out the garbage

My husband has become too comfortable in his castle. I have tried the strike of duties – you know only making one half of the bed or not doing his laundry. That didn’t work – at all. This is why I want your opinions. During our dinner garbage conversation I warned him I would be posting today about his neglect to his manly duties and my lack of wifely duties (wink wink) until he chips in on the garbage take-out. And asking for your comments and would be sharing them with him tonight at dinner. Who am I kidding – I AM NOT MAKING DINNER. He asked me to refrain from sharing our marital bliss, that people don’t need to know about this. Well here it is on the WWW for everyone to read; about his lack in the garbage department.

Thanks in advance and can’t wait to hear from you and see how you guys manage.

The hubby and I had five weeks ahead of us to see the sights, well the first two weeks were just for us and then the in-laws joined us. Our holidays started with visiting long lost friends in Buffalo. And as always we had a wonderful time catching up and remembering our days long gone. So officially our holidays started really on the Sunday when we made our way towards Florida.

St. Augustine was our first destination planned.

If you are ever traveling South make sure to stop and visit St. Augustine, we had a wonderful two days of sight seeing, great food and lots of entertainment. Almost forgot to mention tons and tons of little shops. We stayed at a Best Western that allowed us to park free of charge and go exploring. Even after we had checked out of our motel they still allowed us to leave our vehicle free to continue our sight seeing for an extra day. The motel was walking distance from the downtown core of St. Augustine, it was an older motel but nice and clean and very friendly staff. There was always a fresh pot of coffee on with snack cakes and fresh fruit. Weather was beautiful – no jackets required – and sight seeing we did.

St. Augustine is a city in the northeast section of Florida and the county seat of St. Johns County, Florida, United States. Founded in 1565 by Spanish explorer and admiral Pedro Menéndez de Avilés, it is the oldest continuously occupied European-established city and port in the continental United States. St. Augustine lies in a region of Florida known as “The First Coast”, which extends from Amelia Island in the north to Jacksonville, St. Augustine, and Palm Coast in the south. According to the 2010 census, the city population was 12,975. St. Augustine is the headquarters for the Florida National Guard.

The beautiful old buildings were filled with history all beautifully restored and maintained to give any history buff a memorable time. We visited Castillo de San Marcos, a fort that you can leisurely walk through on your own or with a guided tour, full of artifacts. The Castillo de San Marcos is St. Augustine’s biggest attractions, and the oldest structure in the entire city! At the fort you will find plenty to explore, from the numerous rooms, to the large interior courtyard and gun deck, which offers a great view of the city. This is a great attraction for the whole family to learn about the nation’s oldest city. Re-enactments, cannon firings, and weaponry demonstrations are held throughout the day.

The Oldest Wooden School House, right where it was originally built, depicting how the children once were taught. The schoolhouse does appear on the tax records for the year of 1716, and is sure to have been in existence before then. The school remains as it was over two centuries and was made completely by hand, even the nails! Not only is this the oldest schoolhouse in the country but it was also the first co-ed school in the country. It is located near the old city gates in historic downtown St. Augustine.

The original owner, who became its first schoolteacher, was Juan Genoply. Once inside you can sit with the schoolmaster and his pupils as they re-create the scene. These animatronic figures in period dress bring history to life as they describe how school was back then. There are also copies of the textbooks used by the students and other school artifacts on display inside. Another unusual item on the schoolhouse is the large chain and anchor around the outside. This was originally to keep the schoolhouse grounded during hurricanes!

The hubby and I did a night tour with the Old Town Trolley service called Ghosts and Gravestones and we had a blast. On our tour we were able to see St. Augustine at night and you guested it, Ghosts and Gravestones. A visit to an Authentic Old Jail, St. Augustine’s Lighthouse and more. Our host for the evening was a local resident dressed in period costume giving us a spine chilling tour of everything scary in St. Augustine – we loved it!

I could continue on and on of all we seen and did in St. Augustine but I don’t want to spoil it for you. Next holiday to Florida will for sure include another visit to beautiful St. Augustine and would recommend it to young and old just be sure to wear comfortable shoes. Don’t worry about packing a lunch there is lots of great restaurants that are very reasonably priced for every budget and appetite, you won’t go hungry in St. Augustine.

I would like to thank Wikipedia for my history and augustine.com for putting into words better than I can some of what we were able to see.

Can you believe it is 2012!? And we are just getting back to day to day life. Okay I am. Holidays was wonderful, maybe a bit long, but still wonderful. We did lots and lots of touring, and seen some great sights. If you ever get the chance to go to the Florida Keys, pack-up and go. A beautiful place to see!

So now I am getting myself back to normal – well as normal as I can be. The packing is all undone, washed and put away. Still a few things to find homes for from our travels but I ordered a couple of curios to help out with that. They come Thursday and I will be able to finally have homes for all my various frogs. Yes I have just a few frogs, well each room does.

Florida offered us warm sunny skies pretty much daily and coming home to all this cold really makes me want to catch the next flight right back to the sunny south. There really isn’t anything about the cold I appreciate, well other than ice cubes. I am all for Global Warming, not really, but sure wouldn’t miss winter.

How many of you put on weight over the Christmas holidays? I think I have brought home more than extra luggage in the form of suitcases and now will have to work extra hard to get that weight under control. Any tips?

The hubby and I have been on a bit of a no speaking terms for the past week. He did the unthinkable! Yep you got it! He bought a damn Harley Davidson! And I am not at all happy about this new mid-life crisis he is going thru. Another woman would of been preferable. I guess he doesn’t remember the conversation we had once upon a time regarding a motor cycle “motor cycle in the garage means divorce”. Do you think that is what he is hinting at? Nay, but I am sure ticked! There goes my summer weekends, because we know where he is going to be, and I sure as hell am not going to be on the back of that damn thing. MEN!

Funny it has been forever since I have put anything on here and I am finding myself finger tied. So much going on and I guess I just don’t know where to begin. Maybe I will do some reviews of some of the places we have seen and stayed. Oh and the food, we sure had some great food, terrible service, but great great offerings. Okay that is where I am going to leave you. Off I will go and look through my menus and hotel slips and post some reviews for you.

hugs and kisses for now

I am a person that generally reads a lot, and reads a lot of the articles my family and friends share on Facebook. This morning, an article really caught my eye that my Uncle shared on his Facebook. I instantly knew it was something I had to share on MommyMatter as it is not only a truly touching article, but something I feel every parent should feel when they learn that their child might be gay.

If you know me, you know I am the first to scream at someone for being rude and belligerent about the gay community. I can’t stand when people sit telling their idiotic jokes about gays. I refuse to introduce my children to such a life. They deserve the opportunity to learn that whether a person is gay or straight, they are still a person. It doesn’t matter what their choices are with who they’d like to spend their life with, as long as they are happy.

I have been asked in the past how I would react if my son came home and told me he was gay. Honestly, I would be happy he felt he could tell me and wasn’t ashamed of who he is.

He would still be my son. He would still be the little boy I raised. He would still be the little boy I’ve loved for many years, and I hope he finds that one person that makes him happier then happy. Hopefully when my children are older, being gay isn’t considered such a no no and people stop belittling gay people for being no different then every single person on the face of this earth.

If I ever heard one of my children say anything homophobic, I think I would snap right out on them and make them stop being shallow hearted people. I am glad my parents raised me to love people for who they are, not who they are with. I know if any of my siblings or myself were gay, we could of told our parents with pride and no judgements. They love us for us, even if we are brats!

Now, for that article!

Lessons from Sharing the Story of My (Possibly) Gay 6-Year-Old Son

Editor’s note: “Amelia” is a pseudonym chosen by the author in order to keep her family’s identity anonymous.

On August 16 I learned what viral meant.

I wrote an essay about my oldest son and his love of a popular gay television character, Glee’s Blaine, and how this crush led to him telling me he wanted to kiss boys, not girls. I naively posted it to a blog, thinking some fans of the show might think it was cute.

Within 24 hours it had been reposted and “liked” over 30,000 times on the blog’s website. It wasn’t long before messages started flooding in, other websites began posting it and people were commenting. The response was overwhelming positive. What I thought was a simple story about my kid and our family had clearly stuck a chord with a lot of people.

It also made some people uncomfortable. Of the criticisms, the most common is that my son is six years old and doesn’t know anything about sex. While I fully acknowledge this may not be the end-all-and-be-all to my son’s sexual orientation, I object to the idea that being gay is only about sexual acts. Our emotions and feelings, our attractions and compulsions, all contribute, not just our body parts. If my son had a crush on the star of iCarly, I doubt people would be saying he was too young to have those sexual feelings towards a girl. I think they would think it was an innocent schoolboy crush, which is exactly what it is.

Plus, for every comment I’ve read saying my son is too young, I have received multiple messages from adults saying “I knew when I was little, too.”

It got me thinking and after awhile I started to feel like I knew this big secret that shouldn’t be a secret at all: Every gay adult used to be a gay kid. It’s not as if all children start off as straight until some time later when someone flips the gay switch. We are who we are from the very moment we are born.

You can continue reading this article over on Huffington Post: http://www.huffingtonpost.com/Amelia/gay-children_b_954350.html

This article is an astounding read, and I am glad there are people in the world that accept their children for who they are. Every person is an individual, and every person deserves the same respect. I hope that one day we can put an end to the hate and people can be proud of their life without worrying about being knocked down and belittled.

Christmas is literally, one sleep away. Exciting! This year we aren’t doing our usual Christmas shenanigans as we are on holidays in Florida. Our Christmas will be a nice, quiet, peaceful Christmas without an abundance of running around attempting to see the entire family over the holidays. Instead, we will lie back at the pool and await the arrival of Grama & Papa who are bringing Christmas dinner with them! This year, we are doing it up Bob Evans style.

Being on holidays means we don’t have a lot of the cooking resources that I am used too, so I didn’t hesitate to the idea of ordering in. I don’t have any of my usual cooking equipment that I would generally use to make massive meals with. I have gone 2 weeks without baking and let’s just say, it has been hard.

Since we’ve lacked writing lately, I couldn’t resist writing to all of you today as we are doing nothing. The stores are beyond insane and I don’t have the patience for the crowds. It has been hard the past few days going to Disney and not losing my mind. Every step you take, there is another person stepping in front of you. It drove me mad, and adding two kids to the mix makes it even more frustrating. Overall, it was an amazing experience, but not something I could imagine doing every single day. The poor people that actually work there. Don’t know how they do it.

What have we been up to on our holidays? LOTS. Today is the first day I am actually having the opportunity to relax since we got here. First thing we did was go to SeaWorld Orlando. Wow, just wow. What a place that is. Will be doing a full out review on SeaWorld when we are more settled in and not constantly doing stuff.

Next stop, Magic Kingdom! That was one of the most amazing experiences ever. It is a place I had never been too, and neither had my two demonic beings. Glad Grama and Papa were there to experience that first moment with us. The kids definitely were spun with excitement. We got one group photo of all of us in the evening that I am going to share with you… this is one of the only pictures we got all together as it was either Papa or myself behind the camera snapping photos of everyone else.

I had a huge post wrote out, but of course my Internet connection sucks where I am, and lost connection unaware that I lost, and lost everything I wrote up to this point. Ya, screw you Internet!

It is now the evening of Christmas eve. I have spent the majority of my day lying on a lounger beside the pool reading another book thanks to Kobo and their wondrous Christmas deals they got going on. I think I would die without my Kobo books and really would die without my Kobo coupons! I have so many books lined up for reading that I find myself reading every chance I get to just sit. That is if I am not online working.

I shall end this post with a Merry Christmas to all and a Happy New Years to many. We will of course have a few things posted from now until New Years, but not making any promises. Hope everyone has a safe and happy holiday season. Remember, DO NOT drink and drive. It is idiotic. This is the time of year many lives are ripped apart by silly choices, like drinking and driving so be smart and stay sober.

Just thought I’d throw that one in there, since I am always the first to nag at people if they consume alcohol and think they’ll be driving anywhere. Definitely not!

Merry Christmas!

The days of classy New Years Eve parties filled with ball gowns and champagne toasts are a thing of the past. You’re a parent now and your carefree party days are few and far between. While you could probably leave your child(ren) with a family member for New Years Eve when they were really young, as they get older they want to be included in the entertainment and festivities of the special occasion. It can be a lot of fun to invent your own New Years Eve traditions to do each year as a family. From homemade noise makers to tasty party food, you will be creating wonderful memories that will last a lifetime.

Set the stage with some great handcrafted decorations made as a family. Chances are you’re tired of your Christmas tree by the time New Years comes around. But if you aren’t quite ready to take it down, simply turn it into a New Years tree instead. Take down all the Christmas ornaments, but leave the lights on to twinkle through the night. Add some curly ribbon of various colors and top it off with a beautiful, sparkly star. Create a ‘Happy New Year’ party banner out of felt or construction paper, and be sure to add plenty of glitter. If you’re feeling extra daring and don’t mind a bit of a mess at the end of the night, fill some balloons with confetti using a funnel. You can use premade confetti, or simply make your own with paper scraps and a hole punch. And when the clock strikes twelve, pop the balloons with a straight pin and let the confetti fly.

Everyone needs a party hat or crown to wear during the night’s festivities. There are plenty of styles that can be made with just a few basic crafting supplies. Use construction paper to create a crown, pointed party hat, or squared-off pirate hat. Each person can show their unique style by adding pipe cleaners, sequins, glitter, feathers, rhinestones, yarn, or any other random crafting bits you may have around the house. Host a hat making contest and have each family member vote on their favorite. For a fun craft to keep the kids occupied while waiting for the ball to drop, try creating a countdown clock. A paper plate can be turned into a clock using whatever craft materials you have on hand and creates a teaching opportunity for learning how to tell time as well.

A New Years Eve party simply won’t be complete without some delicious party-themed food and drink. Make some bubbly Jell-O parfaits to enjoy using sparkling Jell-O made according to the directions on the box using club soda, seltzer, or ginger ale. Chill it within champagne flutes or parfait glasses and adorn with metallic garland if you’d like for some additional pizzazz. Cover some sugar cones with melted chocolate and let the kids decorate their own ‘party hats’ with various kinds of candy. Bake and decorate star-shaped sugar cookies with icing and multicolored sprinkles. And don’t forget the sparkling apple cider or grape juice.

One of the most enjoyable parts of New Years Eve for the kids is probably making noise, and what better way to ring in the New Year than with some homemade noisemakers. There are a variety of items you can recycle in order to create your noisemakers including aluminum cans and water bottles. Add some dried beans or small pebbles to your canister of choice and seal the opening using heavy-duty tape. Wrap the container with foil or colorful wrapping paper. Decorate with stickers, sequins, glitter, beads, or any other decorations of choice. And once midnight finally comes, encourage the kids to shake, shake, shake their noisemakers.

Right now, I am literally ALL ALONE! My parents have left for Florida. Hubby is on his way to Florida. Here, I sit. Alone.

WOO!

Shoot me now.

Sure, being alone is not something that bothers me much. Actually, I love it. I love being by myself and talking to no one for hours on end. Okay that’s a lie. I HATE when my MeeMa isn’t around. My morning coffee is an epic depression cycle as I’ve got so used to sitting with her drinking my coffee. Over the years, I have once again become very close with my MeeMa and since we moved next door it becomes hard to function without her around.

WeeMan experiences this as well. He is used to seeing his Grama every instances he wants. When it then becomes a sudden inability, he gets very angry until I coax him into doing something to distract his very Grama attached brain.

MeeMa has become my support system over the past 2 years with my children. Hey, she raised my brothers & I, I don’t think I am too messed up. She must of done something right and will gladly take all the advice she can provide.

Now that she is gone, Hubby is gone, frig even the deaf dog is gone, silence is annoying. I will of course complain when the kids are being noisy. Their level of noise is head pounding, jab scissors into my ears so I don’t have to listen anymore kind of noise. Love them to death. When my kids read this when they are older, I hope you make note of the noisy hell you put me through and your children do the same to you!

Okay, back to the silence…

Kids are currently in bed. I attempted watching the wrath of the television but could feel my brain being sucked right out of my sockets. That was an epic fail. Contemplated going to bed, but it was only 8pm at that point and I am only 25 years old. 8pm bed time would just be… saddening.

Now it is going on 10pm. What have I done the past two hours? Ate sour keys, hurt my teeth in process. Turned to chips for some relief. Wasn’t too satisfying. Made myself an apple dumpling and was finally feeling like a balloon about to explode into hundreds of delicious pieces of random foods I’ve ate throughout my day.

Literally, the past 2 hours I sat, eating. Hello hips! At least I know I’ll walk this week since I have no one to drive me to get a coffee. Will make up for all the crap I’ve ate in the past 24 hours.

Have you ever sat in a room, and just thought. Ya, me neither. Thinking, that is so 2010. Yep.

The WeePeople and I experienced an excessively long Santa Clause parade tonight. Glad all the floats said Merry Christmas instead of this “Happy Holidays, Season’s Greetings” crap. I am Canadian.

I was born to think Santa came down the chimney (ummm Santa, my house didn’t have a chimney?!), ate all our damn cookies and left us presents under the tree we decorated so perfectly. That, my deary, is Christmas. Canada = SANTA. North Pole?! HELLO!? We are the north pole to the Americans, since they don’t learn much beyond the location of Toronto, so that makes it their north pole!

The parade was awesome! Freezing, but awesome. BabyGirl got to see her current BFF. WeeMan got to flirt with his sisters current BFF. Remember, they are only 4 & 5. Their flirting is offering the other a piece of candy and smiling. Was a fun night. They ended their night with some epic melt downs, me losing another pound of hair and placing their precious oh so cute heads on their pillows for bed. By precious I mean, screaming, yelling and hating my existence for making them go to bed! Ya, SUCH FUN!

Tomorrow. Oh my. Let’s just NOT wake up. I am nominating tomorrow to be a day of rest. Seriously? If God can do it, why can’t I? I am the ruler of my house. Mommy wants to sleep. Who am I kidding, I’ll be up at 6am listening to a little boy snort back all matter in his nose beside my head.

Apparently Mommy’s bed is comfy and he must vacate his own between the hours of 4:30am and 6:00am and enter into my blissful bed of SILENCE that is now full of the sounds of snot being sucked back. Gross. You enjoy that image! I’d prefer the image then the reality.

Thankfully, we have only 8 more sleeps until we exit our shivering cold lands and enter into sun tanning, alligator feeding & princess territory of FLORIDA!!!!!!! Thank goodness. I don’t think I could handle 5 weeks here, alone, with my children.

Someone would eat a bullet, and it would be me of course.

Like hell they get out of the opportunity of having their own WeePeople and experiencing the wonders of parenthood. Nice try guys. I refuse to live with the idea of you not experiencing the wonderful events I have had to experience since your creation.

Thinking tonight is going to end with me listening to a song on repeat while reading a book all about romance crap that I would never want to exist in my own life.

Romance?

Ya no. I run in the opposite direction. I bite if touched. Don’t touch me. I am not romantic, affectionate or in any way loving to the male species (sorry Hubby, you so know it’s true!). The only people who see the loving side of me are my children, when I am giving their newest boo boo a kiss or using my Mom powers to sucker them into doing something they don’t want to do.

What are your plans for this beautiful weekend?! Let MommyMatter know! I’d love to hear it.
