To me, finding something at a garage sale, flea market, Goodwill, etc. that someone else has loved and then maybe grown tired of, or just doesn’t need it anymore, is like finding gold! 🙂 It is the thrill of the hunt for me, and I sure wish that I had more time to shop this way. I also feel like other’s treasures tell a story – they have seen families and children grow up and been cared for by many. It may sound silly to some people, but it gives me a warm feeling.

I was just looking around my bedroom and thought about all of the pictures on my walls and realized that 90% of them were purchased in this fashion. Some of my very favorite pieces, I paid almost nothing for. Amazing.

I find that it is such a great feeling to reuse and repurpose items that may otherwise end up in a landfill somewhere rotting away. My recent purchases – pictured above – I found at a Goodwill store yesterday and I paid about $10 total. Now, not only did I save them from cluttering up our Earth, but I also feel great about giving back to an organization that helps so many people. You may find clothing, books, cookware, golf clubs and more. I noticed an old cookbook from the 70s and almost picked it up. It was so neat looking at the old recipes.

I just took a minute and searched Bing so that I could read more about Goodwill, and here is what they said about the importance of donating and the enormous help they have been to so many families:

It’s simple. When you donate your stuff to Goodwill, you create opportunities for individuals in your community looking to find a job and build skills, including veterans and military families, single mothers and many others.

Last year, you helped more than 9.8 million people access the career, family and financial support services they needed to succeed. Your impact doesn’t end there — the planet also benefits when you choose to ditch the dumpster and drop your items at Goodwill. Over the past few years alone, you’ve helped keep billions of pounds of clothing and household items out of landfills.

Incredible!!! Even before knowing these figures, it made me happy to donate and shop at Goodwill, but I now will definitely continue to do so.

In the meantime, I look forward to finding a special place in my home for my fabulous finds, so that my family and I can enjoy them for years to come. Hope that you have fun on your next shopping adventure. You never know what you might come across, and you may be pleasantly surprised how much you fall in love with someone else’s things. And, when I am done with them, maybe someone else will be able to appreciate them too.
