Wash Your Salad – The Disgusting Tales of Bagged Salads

March 19, 2013By 1 Comment

We are all busy!  Short cuts are necessities in a lot of our day to day lives.  And don’t forget about convenience.  But when it comes to meal time there is so many options that can help us put a good healthy meal on the table, with all the food groups recommended, why not save ourselves some prep work and grab one of those bagged salads.  The convenience of those salads – whether you add your own veggies or just rip open the bag, just can’t be beat.

BUYER BEWARE!

This is what we learned night before last on the news.  For those with weak stomachs, turn away and stop reading now!

Do you like your salad with a side of poop?  This is what scientists have discovered on our convenience bagged salads.  Now maybe not all brands, but really are you still going to buy?

Three parasites were discovered on our leafy greens.  Mexico was a culprit, but guess what, so was Canadian salads.  Even bagged goods that claimed they have been triple washed still had signs.  Yuck!  Washing can help, but if you are going to the extent of washing your bagged convenience salad, why not just make from the head yourself?  Scientist said possibly the water used to clean the leafs is contaminated, not necessarily the handlers who package.  Meaning their hands are clean, the lettuce is not.

Shocked!

So this now concerns me with other bagged convenience produce.  What about those cute carrots (I have read in the past are cleaned with bleach)?

I guess we need to take a step back and prepare our vegetables the way they were meant to be prepared.  Now if you don’t have the ability to grow and process your own, can’t afford those high priced organic ones (which I really don’t believe are organic – just the label thrown on them saying they are).  Buy locally from your fruit and vegetable stands (well not this time of year for us) and take them home and scrub and peel yourself.  Even store purchased produce should always be cleaned.  How many people have handle that apple before it has come home with you.  That vine of grapes has been completely violated by many many hands.

If it doesn’t have a peel you are removing before consuming – CLEAN IT!

Back to your salad.  For most, a little poop isn’t going to kill you – well that is what they are telling us, thanks I’ll pass on the poop and parasite consumption.
